moved to Herndon VA bought large farm, and became a farmer after Ruth was born got cheated out of large part of the land had barn, icehouse, stables, house on land; all of the building burned down (date ~1915) and no insurance; became poor; rented house nearby; built and operated a sawmill; during WW1 worked for army as draftsman; then back to sawmill and thrashing business; then went to Albion, NY 6 months each year to work with Wendell in sawmill business - other 6 months in Herndon
